My New Sidekick: The My Book Live by Western Digital

August 7th, 2012 by Karmun

I think everyone would agree that this blog of mine is a photo blog more than anything. Without them photos, ElevenRedPaperclips wouldn’t be ElevenRedPaperclips. Admit it, a lot of you are more interested in the photos than what I have to say, anyway! Am I right, or am I right? =P

I try to meet the photo quota of at least a couple every post as much as I can. Trust me, putting up a new post is not easy. Not easy at all. It takes up to five hours every time I set out to compose a good solid post. There’s first the photo filtering, the photo editting, the watermarking, all of which have to be done before the real composing of the post even begins. After much tedious PhotoShopping and Lightrooming only can I start stringing together sentences that will express my thoughts best. All this done the same time I try to figure out how the photos can best complement the text. Whoever said blogging was an easy job??

Resultantly, I end up taking close to a thousand photos a week, if not more. With every event, I come home with at least 300 new photos to sort through. If I’m lucky, I get to filter out half of it and keep only 50%. Having been actively blogging for close to five years, I’ve collected hundreds of thousands of photos, all of which are equally important to me.

I’ve often found myself in a dilemma when my photo-taking habits begin to take a toll on my computer memory space. I’m constantly reminded to clear out my harddisk just so my computer can run normally. But how do you choose which of the thousand and one albums of precious memory to delete to make space?? Photos are not just just photos. Ask any girl and she’ll tell you, each and every shot is important to preserving the moment, no matter how many copies of the same shot you have! You don’t just delete photos as you like!

Lucky for me, I’ve found the solution to my problem with the new My Book Live from Western Digital!

What you’re looking at is the latest in digital memory storage. In fact, Western Digital has not only come up with one, but two solutions to my problem this time!

Introducing the newest in their line of external harddisks, the My Book Live and the My Book Live Duo.

Fancy schmancy name scaring you off? No, they’re only external harddisks by nature, created to help you store extra data outside of your computer when your internal drives get too full. For me, that just means I get to keep all of my photos now and not have to worry about running out of space. Now you don’t have to choose which between your most favourite photos, songs or movies to delete, either!

What’s the difference between the two you ask?

Well, in layman’s terms, the skinnier one stores memory on only one storage disk, whereas the fatter older brother stores on two (hence Duo, geddit? Hehehe)! So whether you’re only a moderate user or super hardcore, they have just the thing for you! Both of them promises the most reliable back up storage you can ask for. Western Digital has also made sure to enhance their key features which include:

1) Double safety backup

Think of the Double Safety feature as a twin to everything you’ll ever store on your computer. Every single file, photo, document you’ll ever have will be mirrored real-time and stored twice with the Western Digital My Book Live to ensure total security that you’ll never lose any important data. Half the capacity of the driver will be used to store any existing data, whereas the other half will store a second back up. What that means is simply that if ever there should be a driver failure (which is highly unlikely) you’ll still have a second set of all your most important data backed up! Imagine never losing another precious photo or important e-mail again!

2) Maximum performance and storage capacity

Tech geeks would love the My Book Live for the endless storage and unbelievable performance speed if nothing else. It operates on an insane 800MHz CPU, which is only the mother of all processors for external harddisks at our current age. Designed around the most recent advances in Ethernet chip technology, My Book Live personal cloud delivers best-in-class read speeds faster than any traditional USB 2.0 drives. Think data transfer that’s so fast you won’t even have realised it’s done! Just downloaded a new video? Oh, hey, LOOK! It’s already backed up! ;]

3) Western Digital personal clouds

Clouds. We keep hearing this everywhere. What exactly does it do and how do we benefit from it? Well, personal clouds allow you to share data, or in this case, send data for backing up wirelessly. This shared storage can then be accessed by users within the home or anywhere in the world through secure remote access as well as automatically backup all the computers in their home. All at the swipe of your finger! Easy peasy!

4) Home Entertainment Hub

The My Book Live may also be set to be your own personal Home Entertainment Hub based on the above mentioned Cloud technology.

The My Book Live system’s  built-in media server can be set to stream movies, photos and music to any DLNA™-certified multimedia device such as a WD TV® Live™ streaming media player, Blu-ray Disc™ player, PlayStation® 3, as well as Xbox® 360s and smart TVs. Now all your devices can work together to give you the ultimate entertainment experience!

That’s not even the best of it.

5) Western Digital Apps to connect to your personal devices

Along with these two new sexy devices, Western Digital has also come up with a couple application specially for smartphone users to fully maximise the features of their new My Book called the Western Digital 2 Go (WD 2go) & Western Digital Mobile Apps.

WD 2go lets us move, copy and share content between our mobile device, our Dropbox and our WD personal cloud so that transferring anything at all is gonna be easy peasy. Just move everything from your phone to the drivers by making a few swipes on your phone! Perfect for lazy bums like me! Look forward to faster photo sharing on demand, sending songs to friends on the spot, exchange videoclips and other multimedia, as well as faster downloading of files and information with this new feature!  WD 2go is available for iPad®, iPhone®, iPod touch® or Android™ compatible mobile devices.

All this sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?
